Helping the Brain Recover: Collaboration in Addiction Treatment
This presentation will take a neurologically informed approach, interpreting addictive behaviors as brain-based impairments that can improve. Jim Anton and Tom Beckers will present on a collaborative effort between the U of M’s Medical Discovery Team on Addiction and Vinland Center to educate and provide insights that can be generalized
to settings where patients with co-occurring cognitive impairments receive health care services.
Thomas G. Beckers has 24 years of experience
in SUD treatment, including 22 years
at Vinland National Center working with adults
with substance use and cognitive deficits.
He has delivered trainings with the University of Minnesota
and the Brain Injury Alliance of Minnesota,
co-authored a mindfulness-based curriculum,
and contributed to research on TBI and SUD.
James “Jim” Anton is a Certified Functional Medicine Health Coach,
Certified Peer Recovery Specialist, and
researcher with University of Minnesota programs
including MIREN and MDTA. He specializes
in neurocognitive aspects of substance use
and supports recovery through a holistic,
science-informed approach. An award-winning musician,
he brings creativity and lived experience to his work and advocacy.
