It is critically important for patients to participate in treatment decisions. The only way they can effectively do that is to truly understand their problem. For that reason, I feel my role is to explain their orthopaedic condition in a way that makes sense to them, to discuss safe non operative options and to consider surgical treatment if three conditions are met: 1. There is a problem that can be improved with an operation. 2. They have tried sensible non operative treatment and the condition has not improved. 3. The degree of personal disability due to pain or lack of function warrant risks of surgery in the patient's view. In short, I try to treat each patient the way I would like a family member treated.
