Macaran Baird, MD, MS, is Professor Emeritus and retired department head in the University of Minnesota Department of Family Medicine and Community Health. He served as the department head from July 2002 to December 2017.

Baird is currently the CEO of University of Minnesota Physicians. Recently, he worked with a multidisciplinary team to develop the Patient Centered Assessment Method (PCAM)©, a tool to assess social determinants of health and help identify barriers to patient care.

Baird also serves as chair of the Minnesota Medical Association MARCH (Minnesota Action to Reduce Costs in Healthcare) Steering Committee.

Previously, Baird was medical director of MMSI, an insurance arm of Mayo Clinic; associate medical director for HealthPartners, a Minnesota health plan; chair of the State University of New York–Syracuse Department of Family Medicine; and family medicine residency director at the University of Oklahoma. Before entering academia, Baird was a family physician and therapist in rural Minnesota. He has served on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Depression in Primary Care National Advisory Council and co-chaired the 2001 Institute of Medicine report on health and behavior. Baird is also past president of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.
