After obtaining his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Maastricht, the Netherlands, Dr. Jop van Berlo performed postdoctoral research with Dr. Jeffery Molkentin at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. There he initiated a research program focused on cardiac regeneration, which he further developed upon joining the University of Minnesota Faculty in 2013.

Research Summary/Interests

My laboratory studies mechanisms of cardiac regeneration. The goal of this research is to develop innovative strategies to enhance the limited ability of the heart to regenerate. To identify these strategies, we study the underlying mechanisms of endogenous regeneration. We are interested in the signaling pathways that determine lineage specification of adult cardiac progenitor cells. Understanding of how these progenitor cells decide to become cardiomyocytes or endothelial cells may lead to development of therapeutics that stimulate preferential differentiation towards cardiomyocytes. We are further studying the impediments for cardiac regeneration, and are finding ways to boost the proliferative ability of cardiomyocytes.
