Summary

Dr. Mettler is an anatomic and clinical pathologist with special research interest in cytopathology of the gastrointestinal tract, specifically mesenchymal gastrointestinal tumors. When she was a resident and fellow in the department she and her colleagues performed studies of unusual cytopathology cases. For example, fine needle aspiration and staining of tissue from patients with certain carcinomas revealed the presence of “raspberry bodies”, “intermediate filament buttons” and other morphologic features that can assist with making a precise diagnosis. Currently, Dr. Mettler and her colleagues are using cytologic and immunohistochemical tools to investigate mesenchymal gastrointestinal tumors, fairly rare tumors associated with different diagnoses and prognoses.
