Dr. Cortez joined the University of Minnesota’s Pediatric Cardiology team in 2018. He has traveled extensively as part of his training in both the United States and abroad and is currently finishing a PhD in non-invasive electrophysiology at Lund University in Sweden. Research interests for Dr. Cortez include diagnosis and risk stratification of various cardiomyopathies, adult congenital cardiology, and electrocardiographic assessment of various diseases and risk stratification of competitive athletes, including vectorcardiography. He performs pacemaker (lead and leadless), defibrillator (transvenous and subcutaneous) implants, non-invasive as well as invasive electrophysiology studies and ablations for patients with supraventricular and ventricular tachycardias, and he implants loop recorders for long-term conitnuous monitoring. He has a pediatric electrophysiology clinic as well as an adult congenital electrophysiology clinic. He is happy to see siblings together as well as siblings and parents together in his clinics (when adults and their children both need to be seen). He loves teaching trainees as well as patients and parents about what is causing their disease processes. He believes patients and their families should have an intimate understanding of the disease process causing their ailments. He also speaks Spanish and is happy to see patients with English as a second language.
