Ward earned a Bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy from the University of North Dakota, a Master's from the University of Iowa, and a PhD from the University of Minnesota. Prior to academics he practiced Physical Therapy for 15 years in the orthopaedic clinical setting. He has a specialty certification in Athletic Training. Ward's area of scientific research is in the foot. He has authored 30 peer-reviewed medical journal articles.
