Dr. Sabrina Scroggins published a new research paper in the April 2025 issue of the Journal of Affective Disorders. The paper is titled “Immune Dysregulation in Bipolar Disorder.”

This study demonstrates that bipolar disorder is marked by lower T helper cell counts with simultaneous upregulation of T cell activation markers, and an increased presence of monocytes supported by corresponding cytokine and genetic profiles. This immune phenotype not only underlines the role of inflammation in bipolar disorder pathophysiology but also establishes genetic and molecular overlap with inflammatory bowel disease, pointing to shared inflammatory mechanisms and potential new targets for therapeutic strategies.
