I had the opportunity this week to present an update on the Medical School to the Board of Regents. I am always proud of the work you do, but recounting the progress we have made in the past six months was amazing.

In the midst of pivoting, repositioning, and focusing around COVID-19, other remarkable efforts have been quietly going forward.

Dr. Shannon has demonstrated excellence as a clinician, teacher, mentor, and researcher. His leadership as Executive Medical Director of Pain Management has resulted in a comprehensive care model that is transforming treatment for patients seeking relief from chronic pain while dramatically reducing the reliance on opioids.

We stand with our LGBTQ+ community in denouncing this discrimination, and will work to ensure that transgender members of our community get the healthcare they need at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Núňez will collaborate with faculty, staff, and students across the Medical School, as well as partners from our communities, to ensure we are addressing issues of inequities, bias, and discrimination in our clinical programs, recruiting, curriculum, and research.

There are now more than two million cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. Although a number of states currently show increases in infections, cases in Minnesota are leveling off with fewer hospitalizations and deaths.

He was named Vice Head of Pharmacology in 2017 and currently holds the titles of Distinguished University Teaching Professor and Distinguished McKnight University Professor.

Racism is a healthcare issue. We will begin at the institutional level by convening an interprofessional group nominated by clinical deans to prepare a roadmap to action in health disparities.
