Hospitalist Scholar Program

The University of Minnesota Division of Hospital Medicine Hospitalist Scholar Program is a structured one-year academic development pathway designed for early-career internal medicine faculty.

The program is designed for early career hospitalists who wish to build a strong foundation in clinical excellence, clinical teaching, quality improvement (QI), research, scholarship, and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS).

The DHM Hospitalist Scholar Program is a one-year program, offering a 1.0 FTE faculty appointment consisting of a 0.50 clinical and 0.50 scholarly split. Scholars balance clinical responsibilities as attending hospitalists with protected time dedicated to scholarly work, teaching, and professional development. The program begins July 1 and runs through June 30.

Hospitalist Scholars serve as attending physicians in internal medicine and specialty hospitalist services. Clinical duties are structured to support the development of early career clinical development while allowing flexibility to pursue academic interests.

  • Teaching Observations: Participate in teaching observations
  • Core Curriculum: Participation is required in several intensive development courses, including:
    • QI Foundations (online, 12 weeks long) or QI Collaborative course (January to September)
    • Collaborative Scholarship Intensive (Fridays, Sept–Feb)
    • DHM Conferences:
      • Early Career Faculty Development sessions (Monthly)
      • Pod/Idea Incubator Meeting (Monthly)
      • Insight Conference (Monthly)
    • DOM Conferences
      • Weekly Grand Rounds (Weekly)
      • M&M (Weekly)
    • SHM Converge Attendance (Spring)
    • Academic Hospitalist Academy (Fall)
  • Scholarly Output: Completion of a capstone scholarly project (abstract or manuscript) is required by the end of the 12-month term
  • Optional Curriculum: POCUS training; leadership, medical education, or QI certificates; University continuing education

Hospital Medicine Scholars will have substantial support from the Division of Hospital Medicine faculty as well as program leadership career development and mentoring. Scholars will have a mentoring and career development committee and will participate in the Division's Early Career Faculty Development Program.

Eligibility

Recent graduates of ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine residencies who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Applicants must be board-eligible or board-certified in Internal Medicine. The program is well suited for physicians seeking careers in academic hospital medicine.
