Bio

Dr. Boucher graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine. He then completed his internal medicine/pediatrics residency at the University of Minnesota, followed by his pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.

He joined the University of Minnesota faculty as Assistant Professor of pediatric hematology in the Department of Pediatrics in 2019. He holds a joint appointment in the Department of Medicine. His specific interests include inherited hemoglobinopathies, especially sickle cell disease (SCD) and thalassemia, and addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) issues in clinical care. He sees pediatric patients with a wide range of hematologic disorders including red cell disorders, cytopenias, and marrow failure disorders.

In the Department of Medicine, he directs the SCD program with a focus on addressing care gaps for adolescents and young adults with SCD and other red cell disorders. In doing so, his goal is to build a lifespan approach to red cell disorders, particularly SCD, and strengthen our clinical care approach and research expansion.

Dr. Boucher's research includes improving patient-centered outcomes and community awareness for individuals with hemoglobinopathies like SCD and thalassemias. He also conducts research focused on addressing health inequities in clinical care, hematologic and otherwise. He is engaged in medical education for non-malignant hematology and in curriculum development around social determinants of health.

Summary
Dr. Boulware is an infectious disease physician-scientist with formal training in clinical trials, public health, and tropical medicine. Dr. Boulware combines his clinical research with nested basic science investigations into disease pathogenesis to conduct translational research. His primary research interests are in meningitis in resource-limited areas including diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and quality improvement initiatives incorporating cost-effectiveness analyses in order to translate knowledge into improved care. Dr. Boulware's current research is focused on improving the clinical outcomes of HIV-infected persons with cryptococcal meningitis, the second most common AIDS-defining opportunistic infection in Sub-Saharan Africa and the most common cause of adult meningitis. Additionally, Dr. Boulware has been motivated to improve the diagnostics for TB meningitis, and now that TB meningitis can be promptly diagnosed, to also improve the treatment of tuberculous meningitis. Dr. Boulware leads a multidisciplinary, international research team with active research collaborations with partners in Uganda, South Africa, Ethiopia, Brazil, Botswana, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

Dr. Bramante's research focuses on remotely delivered interventions to improve health in children and adults with overweight and obesity. This research includes remotely delivered clinical trials that assess interventions that may prevent severe COVID-19 and Long-COVID (covidout.umn.edu). Dr. Bramante also researches ways to assist daily health management at home, such as weight management interventions for children and adults seeking obesity treatment. Dr. Bramante sees patients in the comprehensive pediatric and adult weight management clinics. The M Health Fairview Comprehensive Weight Management Clinic treats each patient individually, acknowledging that obesity and weight loss are very complicated. Both clinics offer medication management, which is often indicated to address dysregulated pathways in the energy-regulatory systems that lead to excess weight so that lifestyle changes can be effective.

Monica Campo Patiño, MD, MPH., completed medical school at Universidad El Bosque in Bogotá, Colombia. She went on to complete a research fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. She received a Master’s in Public Health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Subsequently, she completed an internal medicine residency at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA and a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA.
 
Currently, Dr. Campo is an Assistant Professor in the University of Minnesota Department of Medicine in the Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy, and Sleep Medicine Division. Dr. Campo specializes in the treatment and management of general pulmonary and critically ill patients. She is committed to excellent and compassionate care of patients with chest problems. Dr. Campo’s research focuses on the discovery of new therapies for patients with respiratory infections. She has received independent funding from the National Institutes of Health for her research projects and has published in peer-reviewed journals as well as presented her research at international scientific meetings.
 

Research Summary

Dr. Campo’s research program focuses on the examination of regulatory innate immunity pathways of the early stages of tuberculosis, that lead to the discovery of new therapies.

Her current projects include:

A)  Class I Histone Deacetylases Regulate Innate Immune Resistance to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. New therapies that target the host instead of targeting Mycobacterium tuberculosis directly, known as host-directed therapeutics, offer a promising answer to antibiotic resistance and the inability to kill non-replicating bacilli. Dr. Campo identified a selective inhibitor of histone deacetylases that controls extracellular and intracellular growth of Mycobacteria. This compound may be promising as a host directed therapeutic against tuberculosis. The goal of the current work is to search for the mechanism by which histone deacetylase inhibitors control mycobacteria replication and to study the cellular, epigenetic and genetic mechanisms of histone deacetylases regulation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.

B)   Mycobacterium tuberculosis-induced responses in human alveolar macrophages vs. monocyte derived macrophages: Alveolar macrophages and recruited monocyte-derived macrophages mediate early lung immune responses to Mycobacterium tuberculosis and are poised to determine the subsequent course of infection. Although previous studies documented differences between these cells, few have described cellular functions that regulate critical steps in anti-microbial responses. Dr. Campo’s team identified Mycobacterium tuberculosis-induced pathways that were specifically upregulated in human alveolar macrophages compared to macrophages. Further studies are underway to understand how these specific pathways are differentially regulated in human alveolar and peripheral macrophages.

Winston Cavert, M.D. did his residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and trained in Infectious Diseases and Virology at the University of Washington, Seattle. His research interests include the transcriptional pathogenesis and population biology of HIV and its target cells in tissues (lymphoid tissue, CNS, gut), as well as clinical virology including viral fitness and sequencing. Dr. Chandorkar is an Assistant Professor in the division of Infectious Diseases and International Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Research Summary

Dr. Chen is a tenured Professor of Medicine, an ABIM board-certified cardiac electrophysiologist, and an NIH-funded physician-scientist. His patient-oriented research on atrial fibrillation and atrial myopathy is focused on 3 themes: (1) To identify novel risk factors for atrial fibrillation and atrial myopathy, and discover new strategies to prevent both conditions, (2) To characterize the relationship of atrial fibrillation and atrial myopathy to cardiovascular and neurocognitive outcomes such as stroke and dementia, and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms, and (3) To discover novel strategies to prevent atrial fibrillation and atrial myopathy-related stroke and dementia. As an Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC), Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), and Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) investigator, he conducts some of his research using data from these cohort studies. Currently, he is the PI of 5 NIH R01/RF1-funded projects, which are all focused on atrial fibrillation and atrial myopathy. In addition, he is the PI of a K24 grant, an NIH grant that expands his capacity in mentoring junior physician-scientists and scientists who are conducting patient-oriented research in cardiovascular science. Dr. Chen was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation in 2024.

As a physician, he provides compassionate, evidence-based, and state-of-the-art care to patients with arrhythmias, which includes performing catheter ablation to maintain sinus rhythm in patients with atrial fibrillation (pulmonary vein isolation). Dr. Roy Joseph Cho is an interventional pulmonologist who is board certified in Interventional Pulmonology, Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care Medicine and Internal Medicine. He is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Clinical Advisor to the Earl E. Bakken Medical Device Center at the University of Minnesota.Dr. Cho spends most of his clinical time performing airway, pleural and diagnostic procedures in the operating room and bronchoscopy lab and also consults with patients in the IP/nodule clinic at M-Health's CSC and Maple Grove clinics. He also attends in the medical intensive care unit as well as on the pulmonary and interventional pulmonary consult service.Dr. Cho is involved in didactic and clinical training for pulmonary, critical care and interventional pulmonary fellows, as well as internal medicine house staff, rotating on the ICU, pulmonary consult or interventional pulmonary service. He is an instructor for the point of care ultrasound (POCUS) courses for medical students and critical care fellows at the University of Minnesota.Dr. Cho is an active principal investigator and holds device patents within the interventional pulmonary space. Our group has a long-standing interest in the development and differentiation of human natural killer (NK) cells. NK cells represent a lineage of cytotoxic lymphocytes that play key roles in immunosurveillance of virally infected and transformed cells. Our current work is focused on the molecular mechanisms controlling the differentiation, expansion, signaling and function of unique, heterogeneous subsets of adaptive NK cells that arise in response to cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in healthy individuals and CMV reactivation in hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) recipients. Our group is also actively exploring pathways important for the efficient generation of highly functional NK cells from induced pluripotent stem cells

Summary
Obesity and cardiovascular disease are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Our research focuses on the interplay between intermediary metabolism and these disease processes. Derangements in the processing of carbohydrates, fats, and amino acids are central drivers of disease pathogenesis, but the roles of another metabolic fuel class, ketone bodies, are less well understood. We use novel genetic mouse models with engineered deficiencies in ketone body metabolism to study the metabolic shifts that occur in response to obesity, cardiovascular disease, and dynamic environmental challenges. From these models, we have developed new perspectives of how metabolism adapts in obesity, diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD/NASH), and cardiomyopathy; how these adaptations ultimately prove deleterious, and how innovative and personalized nutritional and pharmacological therapies may mitigate these adverse responses.

We leverage recent advances in stable isotope tracer based NMR and mass spectrometry-based untargeted metabolomics technologies to study metabolism on a systems level, and we also employ established techniques in molecular cell biology and biochemistry to reveal phenotypic shifts at the cellular level. Complex in vivo phenotyping methodologies are strategically aligned with these sophisticated chemical profiling platforms to generate high resolution phenotypic pictures. In addition to our mouse studies, we perform studies in humans to learn how alterations of ketone metabolism and related pathways may serve as diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for obesity, diabetes, NAFLD/NASH, heart failure/CHF, and metabolic maladaptations that can occur in any disease state.

Dr. Davis graduated from Rush University with a PhD in immunology in 2013 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Jeff Miller at the University of Minnesota in 2018. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Davis directed a team of skilled researchers in a collaboration between the University of Minnesota and an industry partner in the development and use of a natural killer (NK) cell-based immunotherapy platform. Dr. Davis's research focus is primarily on mechanisms of NK cell target recognition and preclinical development of NK-based cellular immunotherapies. Dr. de Groen is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, at the University of Minnesota, emeritus staff at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and former Program Director of the Mayo Clinic/IBM Computational Biology Collaboration. He is an NIH-funded clinical investigator and international expert in medical informatics, primary liver cancers and colonoscopy.His endoscopic research is focused on measuring what happens during colonoscopy. Together with collaborators at Iowa State University and the University of North Texas he has created a first-of-a-kind new software system that automatically captures and analyzes "inside-the-patient" video information of medical procedures performed via endoscopy. At present he is studying patient- and endoscopist-specific features, including quality of the colon preparation and effort of the endoscopist to visualize mucosa, remove remaining fecal material and adequately distend the colon. Another focus of study is automated measurement of the degree of mucosal inflammation as seen in inflammatory bowel diseases.The ultimate goal of his endoscopic research related to colonoscopy is a fully automated quality control system that provides real-time feedback to the endoscopist and ensures individualized healthcare by virtually guaranteeing a high quality examination for each patient. Another goal is to extend the technology to other organs examined using endoscopy equipment and combine the information obtained from the optical signal with information derived from other imaging modalities.

Dr. Ana Paim is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Minnesota. She is a graduate of Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública in Brazil and she completed three years of Infectious Diseases training at Hospital Espanhol in Brazil. She later worked for several years in general infectious diseases, HIV and tropical diseases in the Brazilian public and private systems. She completed internal medicine training at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Brighton, Massachusetts and infectious diseases training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Her research interest lies in basic science and translational research in HIV. Dr. Debes graduated from medical school at Universidad Nacional de Cordoba in Argentina. Following his graduation he completed a postdoctoral research fellowship and Masters in Science-Molecular Biology at the Mayo Clinic. He later pursued residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology both at the University of Minnesota. During his fellowship Dr. Debes was awarded an NIH NRSA-F32 grant to study regulation of gene expression by the hepatitis C virus. Dr. Debes leads international research networks in three continents conducting research on viral hepatitis and liver cancer with on-site activities in Tanzania, Ethiopia, Netherlands, Brazil, Ecuador and Argentina. Through these networks he has defined the epidemiology of liver cancer in South America and Africa and has exposed biomarkers for early detection of liver cancer. His research activities expand from public health implementation and education on viral hepatitis to molecular biology aspects to define the mechanisms of viral-related liver cancer. Dr. Debes serves in editorial boards of multiple research journals and has served as reviewer in a variety of NIH study sections.

Dr. Jeffrey Dichter completed his Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland and Internal Medicine Residency at Los Angeles County General Hospital. He is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Dichter is an intensivist with clinical interest in Disaster Preparedness and Response and is a founding and executive committee member of the Task Force for Mass Critical Care, an internationally recognized multidisciplinary organization whose publications helped the United States prepare for and respond to the COVID-19 Pandemic. He is also a faculty member at the University of Minnesota High Consequence Infectious Disease Containment Unit, one of thirteen federally designated centers. 

His research interests include mass critical care surge response and intensive care unit strain. He is also an expert at sepsis and performance improvement, and actively contributes to sepsis care throughout the University of Minnesota and M Health Fairview Health System.
