A Story of Triumph Over Oral Cancer

In May 2023, Kraig Ketola was working as a salesman for a chemical supply company, raising two kids with his wife Lisa and enjoying being an avid outdoorsman, when he received the life-altering news that he had been diagnosed with oral cancer. After researching his options for treatment, Kraig chose Dr. Khariwala due to his expertise and compassionate approach. By June, he underwent surgery to remove the cancerous areas in his mouth, as well as many lymph nodes from his neck. “It was a very difficult recovery, including developing severe Lymphedema in his neck, which required many therapy sessions, twice a day massages, and months of perseverance,” Lisa said. Additionally, Kraig was only able to eat a liquid diet, causing him to lose 25 pounds.
 

Despite the hardships, the Ketola’s found moments of hope. Just six months post-surgery, the biopsies of Kraig’s neck came back negative --- news that was met with overwhelming relief.  Over the past year, Kraig has learned a new way to eat and swallow. His recovery has gone so well, he is happy he has been able to spend quality time with his mom. 

The successful surgery, performed by Samir Khariwala, MD, MS, was nothing short of life-changing. “We are so grateful for Dr. Khariwala and the exceptional team behind him, including Nicole Bjostad, RN, BSN, who went above and beyond in every way during Kraig’s journey,” Lisa said. 

Kraig and his family have joyfully returned to the life they love. Having been able to enjoy watching their daughter Karen become an amazing adult with a successful career, as well as travel around the country for all their son Bill’s college football games, including the NCAA playoffs. “None of which would have been possible without the help of the whole ENT team!”
