Department of Family Medicine and Community Health (DFMCH) JEDI Response Group Receives IMPACT Award
The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) supports what is called the IMPACT (Individuals Making Positive Accelerated Change Together) Award, which recognizes departments, committees, institutions, centers, units, programs, and individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing inclusive excellence within the University of Minnesota Medical School community.
Recent shifts in the greater political climate have prompted discussions about the need to adapt external messaging related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In response, James Pacala, MD, MS, DFMCH department head, sought feedback from faculty and staff, resulting in a robust dialogue on the importance of maintaining our commitment to JEDI principles while navigating these changes. Colleagues raised thoughtful questions regarding due process, and Dr. Pacala took these into account before taking action.
To address these challenges, Dr. Pacala appointed Dr. Eduardo Medina and Aliza Verma, the executive project manager of the department, to lead a small working group composed of individuals already engaged in JEDI initiatives. This collaborative effort aimed to navigate the complexities of the current environment while reinforcing our dedication to these essential values.
The outcome of these discussions led to the establishment of the DFMCH JEDI Response Group, comprising faculty and staff volunteers who have gone above and beyond their regular duties. This group has convened regularly to share insights, provide guidance, and offer valuable feedback as they engage with leadership from both the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) and the Office of General Counsel (OGC). Their ongoing commitment to JEDI principles is commendable and crucial during these challenging times.
Members of the JEDI Work Group have actively advocated for their colleagues and the communities we serve, asking critical questions and ensuring that diverse voices are heard. This group functions as a committee in its own right, with each member contributing to our broader JEDI efforts through involvement in internal committees such as the JEDI Learning Collaborative and the JEDI Education Curriculum Committee.
As we move forward, the DFMCH remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering an environment that prioritizes justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. The dedication of the JEDI Work Group serves as a testament to our collective resolve to uphold these values and create a more inclusive future for all.
The department holds deep appreciation for everyone who engages with JEDI work and offers special recognition of the members of the JEDI Response Group:
