In January 2024, sports medicine fellowship alum Kristin Abbott, MD, passed away while surrounded by her loving family. She fought a courageous battle with cancer.

Known for her academic excellence and passion for the health of athletes, Dr. Abbott received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine in 2009. She completed her residency in family medicine at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and then came to the University of Minnesota, where she completed a fellowship in sports medicine in 2013.

After graduating from the fellowship, Dr. Abbott began working as a team physician for Northwestern University Athletics/Sports Medicine, where she provided medical services to multiple teams such as field hockey, lacrosse, and women's basketball. In 2020 she became medical director for Northwestern Medicine Student Health Services. She also held a faculty position of assistant professor of family and community medicine through Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine.

Due to her love of synchronized team skating, Dr. Abbott volunteered with the United States Figure Skating Association and served as a national technical specialist for synchronized skating. She also served as the vice chair of the technical panel committee for that discipline. In addition, Dr. Abbott was a physician in the national network for Team USA figure skaters and served as the physician for Team USA figure skaters at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, China.
