2024/2025 Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient: Carol Sundberg

The Office of Graduate Medical Education is pleased to announce that Carol Sundberg is the recipient of the 2024–2025 GME Lifetime Achievement Award.

This award is presented to members of the GME community who, over the span of their careers, have made lasting and transformative contributions, provided extraordinary service, and devoted significant time and energy to strengthening Graduate Medical Education at the University of Minnesota. It is the highest honor bestowed by our office—and Carol exemplifies everything it stands for.

Carol has served the University of Minnesota Medical School for more than three decades, including 25 years as Director of the Office of Graduate Medical Education. Over that time, she has built and led one of the most respected GME offices in the country, guiding the development and oversight of more than 150 residency and fellowship programs, serving over 1,000 physicians-in-training each year. Her visionary leadership and deep institutional knowledge have shaped the policies, partnerships, and infrastructure that define GME at the University today.

Carol’s legacy includes championing the development of the MMCGME consortium, standardizing key administrative systems across affiliates, creating professional development pathways for program administrators, and establishing a national presence for the University through innovation and collaboration. Through every initiative, she has remained a steadfast advocate for GME professionals, faculty, and trainees—building systems that elevate the experience of learners while never losing sight of the people behind the programs.

Carol has been not only a leader, but a mentor, collaborator, and catalyst for positive change. Her impact will be felt for generations to come. Please join us in celebrating her remarkable service and well-deserved recognition.
