Dr. April Wilhelm Receives NIDA Grant for a 5-Year Study

April Wilhelm, MD, MPH, received funding of $1,009,367 from the National Institute of Drug Abuse at the National Institutes of Health for a 5-year grant effective January 1, 2025. The purpose of the NIH Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23) is to support the career development of individuals with a clinical doctoral degree who have committed to focus their research endeavors on patient-oriented research. The title of the grant is: "Addressing parental tobacco use in Somali Immigrant families: Adapting an evidence-based intervention in pediatric primary care."
During this project, Dr. Wilhelm will conduct qualitative research to modify an evidence-based, multilevel tobacco cessation intervention for Somali parents in pediatric primary care clinics. She will then conduct a feasibility pilot trial of the intervention that aims to increase the delivery and use of tobacco treatment among Somali parents to reduce tobacco smoke exposure among children.
