The Power of Regenerative Medicine
This year, IEM had the distinguished honor of having Dr. Anthony Atala from Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine and ATP-Bio’s Scientific Board to speak on "Regenerative Medicine: Current Concepts and Changing Trends" at its 2024 Otto Schmitt Lecture. The lecture was attended by nearly 120 faculty, staff, and students from the Medical School, College of Science and Engineering, and other UMN schools.
Atala described how regenerative medicine holds incredible opportunities for multidisciplinary research teams to change the game of medicine through new treatments for muscle, cartilage, reproductive tissues, and skin. Applications of regenerative medicine through new technologies like tissue engineering and 3D bioprinting offer novel diagnostics and therapies for patients with tissue injury and organ diseases.
After his hour-long presentation, Atala answered questions and talked to a number of professors about possible collaborations. Atala ended his visit with a tour of an ATP-Bio collaborative lab, (ME 255) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
