Congratulations to CFI Associate Director Dr. David Masopust, Recipient of the 2026 AAI  Meritorious Career Award

We are proud to announce that Dr. David Masopust, Associate Director of the Center for Immunology and Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Minnesota, has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the AAI Meritorious Career Award. This distinguished honor from the American Association of Immunologists recognizes a mid‑career scientist for exceptional research contributions and a sustained impact on the field of immunology.

Dr. Masopust’s laboratory is internationally renowned for advancing our understanding of T cell immunosurveillance, memory, and protective immunity. His research has helped define how memory T cells, especially tissue-resident memory T cells, are distributed throughout the body and how they function to protect against infection and disease. These insights have reshaped how immunologists think about immune memory and surveillance across tissues, moving beyond traditional models focused on blood samples to encompass the full complexity of organism‑wide immune defense.

A hallmark of Dr. Masopust’s work has been the use of “dirty mouse” models, which better reflect the microbial exposure and immune experience of humans compared with standard specific pathogen‑free laboratory mice. These models have provided valuable insights into how environmental microbial diversity influences T cell differentiation, memory formation, and responses to infection, vaccination, and cancer immunotherapy.

Dr. Masopust has also contributed to the refinement of T cell nomenclature and classification, most recently through consensus guidelines aimed at improving precision and clarity in how T cell subsets are described and distinguished in the field. This work supports clearer communication and more consistent interpretation of immune responses across diverse research contexts.

In addition to his scientific achievements, Dr. Masopust has been recognized with numerous awards, including selection as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Faculty Scholar, the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, and the Beckman Young Investigator Award. His leadership within CFI and the broader immunology community continues to inspire trainees and collaborators worldwide.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Masopust on this well‑deserved honor, celebrating his exceptional contributions to immunology research and his ongoing impact on the global scientific community.
