MEDICAL SCHOOL MATCHMAKING

Match Day is one of the most important dates for medical students, signifying the end of medical school and the transition to full-time clinical training. On March 17, 2023, fourth-year medical students at the University of Minnesota and nationwide learned where they were placed for their residencies. We spoke with two students who reflected on their medical school experience and shared their plans as future physicians.

Andrew Lyman-Buttler

ANDREW LYMAN-BUTTLER

Andrew Lyman-Buttler’s path to medicine wasn’t quite what one would expect. Originally from Forest Lake, Minnesota, he received his undergraduate degree in biology in 2005. Following college, he served as a musician in the U.S. Army and taught science to high schoolers. He went on to receive a Master’s degree in education, and continued teaching and serving in the Army Reserves while he had children and built a life. Eventually, Lyman-Buttler decided it was time to take a chance and make a change; it was time to fulfill his dream of being a physician. On March 17, 2023, that dream came true.

What was your medical school experience like at the University of Minnesota?

I’ve had a great experience at the University of Minnesota. I never even thought about going anywhere else! I learned such an incredible amount in the last four years, and everyone that I got to work with was wonderful and supportive and taught me so much. The amount of support was just incredible.

Zarin Rahman UMN

ZARIN RAHMAN

Zarin Rahman of Brookings, South Dakota is paving her way in medicine, blending her passions for health equity and medical education. As class president of the U of M Medical School class of 2023, she dedicated herself to furthering social justice through education by founding the MedEd Reform Student Coalition, a collaborative group between students, faculty and medical school leadership working on anti-racist change. Looking to the future, Rahman is excited to pursue a career as a clinician-educator, ensuring that all communities receive equal care and that physicians of the future receive the best education possible in our diverse world. On March 17, 2023, her hard work paid off, and her dreams began to take shape.

Where did you match?

I matched Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston Mass. I'm super happy, it was my first choice. My sister and my best friend from college both live in Boston so I'm really excited to have amazing roommates for the next three years.

What was your medical school experience like at the University of Minnesota?

My experience at the University of Minnesota was amazing. It was one of the best schools I really wanted to come to when I applied to medical school and I've met amazing people from the faculty and admin staff at the University to all the attendings I got to work with at Hennepin County Medical Center as well as the University of Minnesota Medical Center. They definitely shaped me into the doctor I hope to be in the next three years.
