Catalog Description:Â Students will have the opportunity to become involved in the evaluation and management of patients with cardiac and thoracic surgical diseases. They will be incorporated at the level of a sub-intern on very busy clinical services. They will attend teaching conferences in addition to clinical duties. They may first or second assist on routine thoracic cases and second assist on some cardiac surgeries.

Course Objectives:Â This elective is designed to expose students to a subspecialty of surgery that is vital to the management of some of the most common medical problems in the United States today. Evaluation of the patient both pre and post-operatively will enhance awareness of the impact of surgery on the patient and his or her disease. Students interested in either surgical or medical fields will develop a greater understanding of cardiothoracic operations, and what it will mean to their future patients. As an advanced surgical rotation, the student is expected to actively participate in surgical procedures, patient ICU management and conferences.
The student will gain exposure and experience in:
- Diagnosis and management of common cardiac conditions.
- Diagnosis and management of common pulmonary diseases.
- First or second assist on thoracic procedures.
- Second assist on cardiac procedures.
- Bronchoscopy.
- Surgical Intensive Care Unit postoperative management of cardiac and thoracic cases.
- Teaching conferences in Cardiothoracic surgery.
