MED 7500 (beg. 2027)

Details

Catalog Description: The Addiction Medicine and Toxicology Inpatient Immersion elective exposes students to the evaluation, treatment, and management of patients with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) in Duluth, MN. In general, the focus will be on hospitalized patients with SUD.
Several clinical opportunities exist: 1) Inpatient/rounding on the Addiction Medicine Consult Service at St. Mary’s Medical Center, 2) Outpatient Addiction Medicine clinic, 3) Inpatient/rounding on the Medical Toxicology Consult Service (optional), 4) Virtual telehealth Addiction Medicine consults/visits throughout Northern Minnesota (optional).

A virtual curriculum will be available, and students are encouraged to attend ECHOs and other virtual community education initiatives. We want students to become familiar with interviewing and diagnosing SUD, appreciate the complexity/overlap of chronic pain and SUD, understand the basics of drug toxicities and withdrawal syndromes associated with various substances, and gain an appreciation of the multimodal treatment needed for the management of SUD, including pharmacotherapies like medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), various psychosocial and behavioral therapies, and what living in “recovery” or continuing care can look like for different people.

Note: MED 7500 is highly recommended prior to FMCH 7596. Beginning in 2027, it is a prerequisite.
