    Catalog Description:  This course provides intensive exposure to current approaches to therapy and rehabilitation of substance use disorder patients. The course is participant observation in group therapy sessions and a robust virtual education component. Course director will facilitate clinic participation when available.

    Students will complete buprenorphine wavering training and be certified to apply for their buprenorphine upon entering residency. Those that have already completed this training will work with the course director for supplemental learning based on their clinical interests.

    Course Objectives:  The student will become knowledgeable of the diagnosis, treatment, and aftercare of patients and families with substance use disorders. Emphasis will be primarily on the group modality of therapy. At the end of the rotation, the student should demonstrate: knowledge of medical and psychological aspects of chemical dependency treatment; ability to elicitsubstance use history from patients; ability to understand the effects of substance use disorders on the person and family; ability to assess own values about alcohol and other substance use disorders; ability to recognize how stigma affects substance use treatment; ability to interact effectively with multi-disciplinary treatment teams.
