    Catalog Description:  In this elective, the student will have an opportunity to experience the clinical practice of child and adolescent psychiatry across settings. Students will be exposed to a broad range of child and adolescent disorders and will assume responsibility for patient management commensurate with their demonstrated ability and initiative. Special emphasis will be placed on the involvement of the family in the evaluation and treatment process. Students will rotate through a variety of clinical sites, including inpatient, outpatient, and/or day treatment opportunities. During this elective, students will work closely with general psychiatry residents, child and adolescent psychiatry fellows, and staff psychiatrists to learn about the diagnosis and treatment of the wide range of psychopathology seen in children and adolescents.

    Course Objectives:  This elective will provide the student interested in child and adolescent psychiatry an introductory experience in the evaluation and treatment of emotional and behavioral problems of children within the context of their biological, family, and psychosocial environment.

    The successful student will be able to discuss and apply:

    • basic principles of normal child development pertinent to the assessment of problems in children and adolescents.
    • basic methods of assessing the medical and psychosocial functioning of children and adolescents.
    • techniques of interviewing children, adolescents and families.
    • treatment modalities used by physicians and other members of a multidisciplinary treatment team.
