    Catalog Description: The EPAC Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine elective is a 4-week elective in which the student functions as sub-intern on a pediatric inpatient service.  This elective will provide the student with clinical experiences emphasizing clinical problems and medical conditions in Pediatric medicine. The goal is to prepare medical students for internship, through a clinically-focused experienced, emphasizing the tasks necessary for internship.  Students will use knowledge of pathophysiology and clinical epidemiology in order to develop a reasoned differential diagnosis.  The students will plan a logical and practical diagnostic evaluation, using principles of evidence-based medicine.

    Course Objectives: 

    • Apply those technical skills commonly employed on a pediatric inpatient service.

    • Formulate an appropriate initial treatment plan taking into account the urgency of the patient’s problems.

    • Formulate an appropriate ongoing health care plan for patients within their socio-economic situation.

    • Assume independent responsibility for the care of patients with appropriate supervision.

    • Communicate and coordinate effectively with members of an inter-professional care team and with patients/families.

    • Assist in providing cross-cover care.

    • Demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning.

    • Recognize and respond appropriately to common medical emergencies.

    • Demonstrate independent learning in response to questions raised in the clinical setting by using textbooks, journal articles, media, computer-based tools and other resources.

    Graded Components: Similar to assessment in the EPAC LIC, namely preceptors/residents will assess the students within the Core Entrustable Professional Activities for Entering Residency framework based on their observation of the student.
