Essentials of Clinical Neurology

Catalog Description: The goals of the neurology clerkship are to increase clinical skills in diagnosing and treating neurologic illnesses, to stimulate interest in clinical neurosciences, and to increase awareness of the role of the neurologist. Upon completion of the course, the student will be familiar with common neurological disorders and will have a sense for when neurologic consultation is appropriate

Course Objectives:  

1. Appraise neurological patients through history and physical examination and describe clinical profiles of common neurological disorders.
2. Analyze the value, limitations, indications, and contraindications of common diagnostic procedures (LP, EEG, EMG, and neuroimaging techniques).
3. Develop differential diagnosis and management plan informed by the history, general physical exam, neurological exam, laboratory and specialized diagnostic procedures.
4. Identify, assess, and formulate management plans for neurological disorders: CVA/TIA (stroke), dementia, meningitis/encephalitis, movement disorders, peripheral nerve/ neuromuscular disorders, and seizure disorder.
5. Differentiate situations appropriate for neurologic consultation, determine the urgency of the consultation, and define the role of the consultant.
