Catalog Description:
Every one of us is alive because someone cared for us; we all need and rely on others to help take care of us throughout our lives. Rather than the autonomous, self-reliant individual of the liberal tradition, the field of care ethics argues that our personal, social, and political relations ought to begin with the recognition that we are mutually vulnerable and interdependent. Novel Care uses literature to explore the complex relationship between the field of care ethics and its significance for the practice of medicine. This course uses care ethics, literary studies, and the history of medicine to supplement and extend our understanding of what it means to provide care, giving you the chance to query the type of care you want to provide and why it matters.
