Catalog Description: The Pediatric Surgical Service at the University of Minnesota is a team involved in the preoperative, operative and postoperative care of surgical and potentially surgical diseases on neonates, infants, children and adolescents. The student physician will participate in all aspects of patient care including initial evaluation, performance of detailed history and physical examinations, initiation and evaluation of diagnostic laboratory and radiologic testing, and the formulation of plans of resuscitation and patient care. The student will be supervised and will report to the resident and attending surgeon during this process. The student physician will attend and assist in the operative care of patients in the operating room and be familiar with the general indications and techniques of the surgical procedures being performed. The student will assist in the formulation of the postoperative plan of care, perform daily rounds and ward care as needed and assist in discharge planning.

Additional duties include participation in outpatient clinics, exposure to pediatric and neonatal intensive care units, and emergency evaluation of pediatric trauma patients. The student is encouraged and required to attend all teaching conferences as scheduled.

Required session attendance: Does not apply

Typical weekly schedule/Delivery Mode: M-F and one weekend day per week.  Time of morning rounds varies based on clinical needs, but will typically start at 6:00am.  The day finishes between 3:00-8:00pm, depending on the clinical needs.  Students are expected to be available for interesting cases that may arrive during the nights.
