Department welcomes new resident
On February 17, 2020, second-year resident Shiwei Huang, MD, MS, joined the U’s Neurosurgery Residency Program. Huang began her residency at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, in July 2018. She earned her MD from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, and her MS in science from Drexel’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Professional Studies based in Sacramento, CA. She earned her undergraduate in biochemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles.
While at Drexel, Huang won several awards, including:
- Axel K. Olsen, MD Neurosurgery Award, 2018
- Medical Humanities Award, 2018
- Award for Outstanding Community Service, 2016.
Huang built her research skills as an assistant to Jian Shi, PhD; and Lynn Pulliam, PhD, at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where she studied the association between miRNA (microRNA) levels and glioblastoma using bioinformatics and confirming her findings with laboratory experiments. Huang also worked on a study with Robert Berman, PhD, in the Department of Neurological Surgery of the University of California, Davis, to measure calcium level changes following neuronal injuries and to determine the ability of potential pharmacological agents to treat traumatic brain injury.
With five published papers to her credit, Huang was first author on four. She’s made several presentations during medical meetings throughout the country, and has submitted a book chapter titled, “Techniques of Thoracolumbar Lateral Approach,” dealing with surgical access to the junction between the thoracic spine and the lumbar spine.
She is bilingual, and her passions include the violin, reading, archery, and medical sociology and medical humanity.
