Dr. Michael Georgieff Named as the March of Dimes 2020 Agnes Higgins Award Recipient

Michael Georgieff, MD, Executive Vice-Chair for the Department of Pediatrics and Director for the Division of Neonatology at the University of Minnesota, has recently been awarded the 2020 Agnes Higgins Award. Dr. Georgieff received this award for his work researching iron deficiency at the early stages of life and long-term mental health. Specifically, his research addresses how an iron deficiency can lead to issues with brain development that have been attributed to multiple neurobehavioral disorders. With this knowledge and more research into the subject, iron deficiency screening practices could be improved to help combat nutrient gaps in both the mother’s and infant’s diets during different stages of development.
