"Families form an invaluable support structure for the well being of anesthesiologists and trainees."
In aligning with wellness and well-being goals, the Anesthesiology department decided to hold a " Family Day" on January 11th, 2020, for all faculty and residents on January 11th, 2020. Family Day was based on an idea created by the Department of Anesthesiology, University of North Carolina. We made a modified version with the intent to build an immersive, interactive experience for the family members of our faculty and residents. We wanted to showcase a glimpse of daily life working as an anesthesiologist. It included real live simulations, with equipment such as ultrasound, Echo machines, a bypass machine, with live models and airway mannequins, so that family members have a tangible, practical experience of our working environment.
We set up different stations during this event to show simulations of complicated scenarios such as resuscitation in an Operating Room and allow family members to see and hold the instruments and equipment we use. To make this a fun event, we included activities for children, such as face painting, coloring, puzzles, and pet therapy.
Our future Anesthesiologists!
What does family mean to you?
We interviewed faculty and residents asking, "what does family mean to you?" during Family Day. Hear what they had to say below:
Dr. Litty John
Dr. Aaron Berg
Dr. Ilana Fromer
Dr. Tjorvi Perry
We believe the event was a success, and we intend to hold a similar event every three years as part of our wellness program. The future activities may change based on the feedback we receive from our families. We hope to make this a regular, sustainable, and enjoyable experience for our residents and faculty.
We will share our experience of this event by writing about our experience.
