John Bischof Named Director of the Institute for Engineering in Medicine
I am pleased to announce John Bischof, PhD, has been named the director of the University of Minnesota Institute for Engineering in Medicine (IEM). IEM is an interdisciplinary research organization within the Medical School and College of Science and Engineering.
As director, John will work to strengthen collaborative efforts between engineering and biomedicine while fostering collaborations with the medical device industry. He will also be responsible for administering IEM programs including fellowships, educational programs, visitorships, and research programs. In addition, he will work to strengthen interdisciplinary academic programming across disciplines to enhance our research portfolio.
Bischof is a renowned researcher in thermal bioengineering and has contributed to applications in therapeutics, regenerative medicine, and diagnostics. He has been a faculty member in both the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Biomedical Engineering since the 1990s. He previously served as associate director of IEM from 2007-2009 and 2013-2017 and spent the past year as the interim director of IEM.
As director, Bischof will hold the Medtronic Bakken Chair, concurrent with the role of director. His permanent appointment begins effective immediately.
