Medical School Leadership Statement on Anti-LGBTQ+ Actions
Author: | June 17, 2020
We are writing today to convey our opposition to the Trump administration’s decision to finalize a rule that would remove nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people related to healthcare and health insurance. We stand with our LGBTQ+ community in denouncing this discrimination, and will work to ensure that transgender members of our community get the healthcare they need at the University of Minnesota. We also commit to using the power of our voices in Minnesota against any effort to codify discrimination of the LGBTQ+ community in our state.
The Supreme Court decision on Monday upheld the illegality of discrimination based on gender or sexual orientation in the workplace. We hope the administration’s regulation will be challenged based on this precedent for other settings, such as the provision of healthcare.
We are grateful for the strong bonds of our community and the growing movement across the nation ready to advance the cause of justice.
