Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton declares April 26 'University of Minnesota Medical School Day'
In recognition of the 130-year anniversary of the University of Minnesota Medical School’s founding by the University Regents, April 26 has been declared University of Minnesota Medical School Day.
MINNEAPOLIS - April 26, 2018 - Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton has declared today, April 26, 2018, “University of Minnesota Medical School Day,” in recognition of the 130-year anniversary of its founding by the University Regents.
On April 26, 1888, University Regents formally fulfilled the founding intentions of the University of Minnesota by adding the College of Medicine and Surgery to the curriculum offered to students in the state. At the time, the students followed a rigorous course of lectures lasting a little over one year to complete their education.
By October of that year, classes began with 116 students following the merger of three private medical school programs in Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Today, the University’s Medical School has an entering class of nearly 232 students on its Twin Cities and Duluth campuses and continues to fulfill its land-grant mission of preparing physicians to care for Minnesota families and communities. In addition, its faculty discovers and delivers innovative treatments and cures through research and provides care through a network of clinics and hospitals.
