Research Day 2020

The Department of Dermatology’s 15th Annual Research Day was held virtually on Wednesday, April 8, 2020, with 50 faculty, staff, residents, students and researchers attending. Our guest speaker was Michael McAlpine, PhD, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, University of Minnesota. The title of his talk was "3D Printing Materials & Devices on the Skin”. Dr. McAlpine’s talk focused on innovations in 3D printing and how they relate to Dermatology.
There were 26 abstracts submitted for judging by an expert panel of judges. Awards were given for the Most Outstanding Research Contribution and three additional excellent abstracts.
Congratulations to the following speakers:
Samantha Gardeen, MD, PGY1 Derm resident, received the Most Outstanding Research Contribution award for her abstract “Cutaneous reactions in children treated with MEK inhibitors, BRAF inhibitors, or combination therapy: multi-center retrospective study”

Audrey Nguyen, Research Fellow - Use of dupilumab in pediatric patients with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis: a retrospective chart review
Amrita Goyal-O'Leary, MD, Med Derm Resident - Patients with mycosis fungoides are at increased risk of lymphoma, melanoma, lung cancer, and bladder cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Rachit Gupta, MS3 - Improving knowledge of Mohs surgery in patients and families with 3D-printed models and video animation
Four of our research faculty also presented their research:
Mei Bigliardi-Qi, PhD, Associate Professor - Skin development with chronobiologic applications in aging and wound healing
Paul Bigliardi, MD, Professor - In-vitro testing of delayed type drug hypersensitivities
David Pearson, MD, Assistant Professor - Tips on patient registries: design, maturation and outcomes
Javed Shaik, PhD, Assistant Professor - Deciphering optimal combination of platelet-derived growth factors to stimulate hair growth in alopecia patients
