Professor of Surgery and Vice Chair for Education, Melissa E. Brunsvold, MD, FCCM, is the recipient of the 2023 Shubin-Weil Master Clinician/Teacher: Excellence in Bedside Teaching Award from the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM). 

Dr. Brunsvold is also the Program Director of General Surgery Residency and current M Health System Medical Director of the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) life support program

According to the SCCM, the Shubin-Weil Master Clinician/Teacher: Excellence in Bedside Teaching Award recognizes an SCCM member who is a role model in both the teaching and ethical practice of critical care. The awardee must also lead by example and leadership, substantially furthering the expert and appropriate use of life-support interventions. Each year, many outstanding clinicians are nominated.

SCCM is the largest nonprofit medical organization dedicated to promoting excellence and consistency in the practice of critical care. 

Dr. Brunsvold will be honored during the combined American College of Critical Care Medicine Convocation/Society of Critical Care Medicine Awards Ceremony on Sunday, January 22, 2023, at the Hilton Union Square Hotel in San Francisco, California.
