Stem Cell Scientists Tackle hearing loss for those with Cochlear Implants

University of Minnesota Stem Cell Institute scientists Peter Santi and Walter Low are working to make cochlear implants an option for more people who have disabling hearing loss by developing a way to regenerate inner-ear nerve cells. 

While stem cell scientists around the world have tried, unsuccessfully, to regenerate these specialized inner-ear nerve cells, called spiral ganglion neurons, the U of M team is taking a different approach that shows promise.
