Toward a More Diverse and Inclusive Future
Scientists know that diversity is essential to good science. The greater the sample and the broader the universe of ideas, the better the research. Our capacity to learn more, faster is enriched through diversity.
Unfortunately, the current conversation surrounding diversity is often burdened by platitudes, worn threadbare by overuse. Sometimes the conversation is politically charged, leaving us resistant to engage. We must change the conversation and push past these challenges to do what is fundamentally right for our Medical School.
No single person or group understands all the aspects of diversity as they affect others. It is extremely important for everyone to review the proposed revised Diversity Statement and provide your feedback by Monday, September 23. Please tell us what’s missing. What do we need to clarify? What could be said better? We need and value your perspective.
Diversity—like all of our values—is a lived commitment, and we demonstrate this commitment through action that helps to shape our environment and define what we stand for. We have recently implemented several formal efforts to reinforce our commitment to this value:
- Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity Committee established to implement the recommendations from the Diversity and Climate Expert Panel’s (DCEP) report and establish a timeline for those stated goals.
- Vice Dean for Diversity and Inclusion search committee activated and the position posted. The goal of this vice dean is to ensure diversity and equity are prioritized at the highest levels of decision-making.
- CTSI/Medical School Early Career Research Award created to provide critical research funding that attracts early career, tenure-track faculty from underrepresented populations.
- The Medical School joined the University’s College Multicultural Access, Diversity, and Equity (MADE) Initiative to learn how to make data-driven decisions involving diversity.
Institutional efforts are critical, but they are only a part of what we need to do to ensure we maintain an inclusive, respectful, and equitable Medical School where all perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds are honored.Â
As we work together toward a more diverse and inclusive future, your knowledge and observations are critical. I look forward to your feedback.
