The inaugural 2026 University of Minnesota Medical School Postdoctoral Retreat gathered postdoctoral scholars from across disciplines to celebrate postdoctoral research achievements, recognize award recipients, and strengthen connections with peers and faculty. This program consisted of an interactive poster session, presentations for University of Minnesota postdocs from various biomedical sciences specialties.

The central goal of organizing the inaugural retreat was derived from the idea of building a strong and supportive postdoc community and acknowledging the scientific contributions of postdocs. The event created a dynamic and inclusive environment that promoted scientific advancement and professional development.

“As Chair of the Medical School Postdoctoral Council (MSPC), I recognized a need for a more unified space where postdocs across departments could engage meaningfully beyond their individual labs.” stated Dr. Nidhi Joshi, postdoctoral associate in the Department of Pharmacology.

The retreat showcased a variety of impactful research spanning from cardiovascular science, computational biology, and genetics. “For example, research presented included studies on mechanisms driving cancer progression, genetic regulation in complex diseases, and computational approaches to understanding biological systems.” A keynote talk by Dr. Shailesh Shahi highlighted innovative research on how obesity-related changes in the gut microbiome affects immune responses and contributes to multiple sclerosis. The retreat fostered meaningful scientific collaboration and knowledge sharing, leaving a lasting impact in the postdoc community.

The implementation of the Postdoctoral Retreat will continue to foster a sense of community, gathering postdocs of all specialty areas to learn and connect with one another. As chair of the University of Minnesota Medical School Postdoctoral Council, Dr. Joshi recognized how important it is for postdocs to feel valued and supported. Events like this were created to provide opportunities for recognition, mentorship, and career exploration.

The efforts of the Medical School Postdoctoral Council played a central role in organizing and bringing the retreat to life. The gathering of postdocs at the inaugural Postdoctoral Retreat reaffirmed Dr. Joshi of the importance of creating an event like this, which honors the achievements, research, and collaboration of postdocs to further strengthen the community. “As Chair of MSPC, it was especially fulfilling to see our vision come to life and to know that the event made a positive impact on the postdoctoral community.”
