A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming. Although some anxiety and uncertainty is normal, some people experience significant emotional distress. Severe distress can disrupt your everyday life by causing sleeplessness, concentration troubles, and more. According to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), only 5% of cancer survivors seek help with their distress. While you are caring for your physical health, it is also important to know that seeking emotional and social support can greatly benefit your overall health.
A few approaches include:
- Meditation and stress management
- Cancer education sessions
- Social support groups
You may have finished your cancer treatment, and although those around you may be happy and expect you to be as well, you may not be. It can take time for you to return to your “old self,” or you may even find that you are different and there is now a “new normal.”
