Kelekar receives Medical School faculty research award

LMP associate professor Ameeta Kelekar has received a Medical School/UMF Bridge Award of $20,000 for her project “Glutamine carbon tracer analysis and label-free quantitative (LFQ) proteomics to study the role of Noxa in human T cell metabolism.”  Matching funds were provided by LMP and the Masonic Cancer Center.  The award period runs from August 2019 to January 2021.

Li’s Alzheimer’s research is highlighted at AACC meeting

The Alzheimer’s Disease research of LMP associate professor Danni Li and her colleagues was highlighted at the AACC annual meeting August 5.  Their research shows that certain plasma metabolites can predict which Alzheimer’s patients are likely to see their symptoms improve with exercise therapy.  These metabolite biomarkers could be used to develop a blood test to guide Alzheimer’s treatment.  LMP clinical chemistry fellow and first author of the study Ghaith Altawallbeh presented the research findings at a poster session.

Linden and Williams to present at ASCP annual meeting

LMP associate professor Michael Linden and LMP assistant professor Sarah Williams will give an educational presentation on VMT2-19 peripheral blood-smear review for the practicing pathologist: Key diagnoses that you never want to miss at the ASCP annual meeting Sept. 11-13 in Phoenix, Arizona.

M Physicians welcomes new Chief Operating Officer

Runjhun Nanchal has been named Chief Operating Officer, leading clinical operations, process improvement and facility management for M Physicians and our academic Specialty Clinics and Surgery Center.  She joins M Physicians most recently from Banner Health's Academic Division in Tucson, AZ. Runjhun joined M Physicians August 5.

Medical School Research and Equipment Grants & Bridge Funding deadline is Sept. 15

Research and equipment grants are awarded to Medical School faculty for basic and clinical research.  Priority is given to startup funding for new faculty, bridge funding during lapse in NIH RO1 or similar type grant and equipment funding.  The application deadline for Medical School Research and Equipment Grants & Bridge Funding is Sept. 15.

Grant-In-Aid program funding applications open today

Applications open today August 19 for the OVP Research Grant-In-Aid Program. These funds are used to support independent research and act as seed money for developing projects to the point of attracting more complete, external funding. In fiscal year 2019, 82 grants were awarded with an average award of $35,147.

U of M Wellbeing Program deadline approaching

The deadline for earning wellness points through the U of M Wellbeing Program is August 31.

Upcoming events of interest or things to do

The U of M Farmers Market will run until Sept. 25 on the Gateway Plaza, just outside the McNamara Alumni Center.  The market is held rain or shine, every Wednesday between 11 am and 2 pm. 

LMP faculty can sign up for professional headshots, which are open to all Medical School faculty on Sept. 12 from 12 noon - 3 pm in Mayo D199. You can reserve one of the remaining spots and walk-ins will be added to a queue on arrival. The Medical School plans to offer headshot sessions every fall and spring. You can sign up here.
