Dehm receives DOD research award

LMP professor Scott Dehm and Rendong Yang, head of the Computational Cancer Genomics lab at the University’s Hormel Institute, have received a Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program Idea Development Award of $895,852 for an “Integrative analysis of exitrons in metastatic prostate cancer.” Their research program aims to discover genetic markers that could help doctors predict which prostate cancer patients are likely to progress to later stages of the disease.

Research paper by Skubitz and colleagues is highlighted

The Foundation for Women's Cancer (FWC) Women's Cancer News Weekly highlighted a feature article “Testing for certain biomarkers may improve early ovarian cancer detection” based on a study published by Amy Skubitz and her colleagues in Cancer Prevention Research this past spring.

Dean Tolar and UMP CEO Konety to host faculty and staff forum

Mark your calendars for the 2019 Medical School and UMPhysicians Faculty & Staff Quarter Two Forum on Wednesday, July 31, 7 - 8 a.m. in Moos Tower 2-520 hosted by Jakub Tolar, MD, PhD, Dean of the Medical School and UMP Board Chair, and Badrinath Konety, MD, MBA, UMP CEO and Vice Dean for Clinic Affairs.  This event will include strategic updates regarding the practice and our clinical partnerships.

Kersey memorial lecture is coming up

The fifth annual John H. Kersey memorial lecture is scheduled for Friday, July 26, 4-5 pm in 1-125 CCRB.  The speaker is Jedd D. Wolchok, Chief of the Melanoma and Immunotherapeutics Service and Lloyd J. Old Chair in Clinical Investigation at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
 

Don’t miss this professional headshot opportunity

LMP faculty can sign up for professional headshots, which are open to all Medical School faculty on Sept. 12 from 12 noon - 3 pm in Mayo D199. You can reserve one of the remaining spots and walk-ins will be added to a queue on arrival. The Medical School plans to offer headshot sessions every fall and spring.  You can sign up here.

Upcoming events of interest or things to do

A clinical faculty meeting is scheduled for today, July 15, from 11-12pm in 450 MCRB to review and discuss the results from the ACGME faculty survey.    

Assistant professors and early-career associate professors are encouraged to apply to the NIH Proposal Preparation Program (P3) being offered this fall.  P3 is a program for faculty members in the Medical School preparing for their first K- or R- series NIH grant proposal.  Applications for the fall cycle are due July 29.  Find more information here

The U of M Farmers Market will run until Sept. 25 on the Gateway Plaza, just outside the McNamara Alumni Center.  The market is held rain or shine, every Wednesday between 11 am and 2 pm.  The market features Twin Cities-area vendors who sell a variety of fresh seasonal produce, including berries, sweet corn, tomatoes, apples, and pumpkins. The market also features produce from Cornercopia, a University of Minnesota student-managed organic farm.  When you shop at the market bring along a reusable bag to tote your market goods. Also, bring small bills to pay with cash.
