In 1996, the University of Minnesota began a process of realigning resources that resulted in the existing Office for Equity and Diversity (OED). This intentional process of building a strong, interwoven structure reflects the university’s view of equity and diversity as critical elements and core values in achieving excellence at a leading research institution.
Campus climate emerged over the last three years as a pressing issue through the Twin Cities campus strategic planning process, as well as past and current grassroots efforts led by campus groups concerned about the experiences of marginalized groups at the University of Minnesota. To address campus climate issues, in early 2014 President Kaler charged senior leaders with forming the Campus Climate Workgroup (CCWG) to study climate on the Twin Cities campus–what’s working, what resources are in place, and what needs to change. Current priorities include a continued push to hire more diverse faculty and staff, collecting data about progress in campus climate efforts and current issues, and fully implementing the Bias Response and Referral Network.
The Gender and Sexuality Center for Queer and Trans Life provides education, advocacy, outreach, and support to students, staff, faculty, alum and community members. We strive to create a campus climate where more inclusive understandings of gender and sexuality foster a sense of belonging for all.
HELM focuses on some of the challenges that trainees from minority and underserved groups as well as other faculty whose research is addressing health equity may face. A new cohort of HELM fellows is selected annually to participate in the program.
Our Voices: Indigenous and Women of Color is a dialogue group which aims to support and engage the intersection of identities, foster a safe space for identity development, self-expression, and self-reflection, and develop responsible leaders to advance the needs and enrich the experiences of indigenous women and women of color.
The mission of the Women’s Faculty Cabinet is to improve and enrich the academic and professional environments for women faculty at the University of Minnesota and to ensure that the University continues and strengthens its commitment to the success of its women faculty members.
