Creating Hope for a Family with Two Children Diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis
Travis and Nicole Fuechtmann navigate the challenges of raising three children, two of whom—Bryn and Vivian—have cystic fibrosis (CF). Initially overwhelmed, the couple quickly shifts focus from isolation to embracing life, supported by the dedicated team at the M Health Fairview Minnesota Cystic Fibrosis Center. Bryn and Vivian lead active lives, participating in soccer, hockey, and water sports with their older brother, Kade. Samuel Goldfarb, MD, Professor in the Division of Pediatric Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine at the University of Minnesota and Co-Director for the Minnesota Cystic Fibrosis Center, emphasizes that limitations shouldn't define the children's experiences; instead, the focus is on finding solutions. Advances in CF treatment have dramatically improved life expectancy and quality of life, transforming what was once a grim diagnosis. Daily routines for Bryn and Vivian include wearing special vests to help clear their lungs and taking enzyme supplements for digestion. Despite the unpredictability of genetic diseases, the Fuechtmanns remain hopeful. As Bryn and Vivian learn to manage their care and participate in promising drug trials, the family fully embraces life, supported by a strong medical team and their unbreakable bond.
