Dr. Paul Orchard Honored as a 2022 Healthcare Hero

Paul Orchard, MD, Professor in the Division of Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation & Cellular Therapy Program, has pioneered the use of life-saving gene therapy for the fatal disease metachromatic leukodystrophy. He worked with the FDA to get it approved so that it could be performed for the first time in the United States on one of his pediatric patients who is struggling with this disease. Although it has been used two more times since then, there is still a lot of work to be done in order to make this gene therapy a general treatment.
