The Department of Pharmacology is committed to providing high-quality service through the efforts of our faculty, alumni, staff and students. We provide scientific expertise, mentorship, volunteer work, and outreach to the University of Minnesota, our local communities, and around the world. Some examples of our efforts are as follows:
The Pharmacology Club is a Campus Life Program (CLP) student group for undergraduate students. In the spring of 2019, Pharmacology Club members volunteered with Second Harvest Heartland – a Minneapolis-St. Paul food bank – and packed food for people in need in our community. In the fall of 2019, they served dinner at the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge in Minneapolis. Follow the activities of the Pharmacology Club on Facebook!
Pharmacology Graduate Student Organization
The Pharmacology Graduate Student Organization (PGSO) was founded in part to mobilize the resources and talents of our student cohort to engage with the local community. The PGSO has worked extensively with the Angel Foundation, a Minnesota-based organization that provides emergency financial assistance, education, and support for adults with cancer and their families. In early 2020, PGSO collected food and monetary donations on behalf of The Sheridan Story, another local organization that combats childhood hunger in Minnesota.
In addition to raising money for other charities and causes, the PGSO also promotes scientific outreach. In winter 2020, students organized a pharmacology volunteer event at the Minnesota Science Museum's Women in Science and Engineering Day. PGSO officers performed hands-on DNA extraction for children of all ages and their parents. Our faculty play key roles in institutional governance, strategic planning of University of Minnesota centers and institutes, and research oversight by serving in leadership positions and on key committees in the Graduate School, Medical School, and Academic Health Center.
Our faculty are also active participants in relevant research societies, including American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET), Society for Neuroscience (SFN), Research Society for Alcoholism (RSA), Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF), American Cancer Society (ACS), American Heart Association (AHA). We also regularly serve as advisors, consultants, and reviewers for external entities, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The Department of Pharmacology is supported by the MNPI Center, one of the staff administrative centers of the University of Minnesota. MNPI Center staff recently created the MNPI Supports program, a charitable intiative designed to engage the Pharmacology and other Basic Sciences learning communities to give back to a different local cause every fiscal year. In FY20, MNPI Supports raised over $2,000 for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) - Minnesota Chapter. You can read more about MNPI Supports: NAMI here.
