Affiliate Scholars
About the ISGH Affiliate Scholars Program
Affiliate Scholars are researchers and educators who contribute on an annual basis to the mission of the Eli Coleman Institute for Sexual and Gender Health (ISGH), in research, education, clinical scholarship, or advocacy. They are not ISGH full-time staff or faculty, and their contribution is outside of any contract they may hold with ISGH. Affiliate Scholars may be at the University of Minnesota, within M Health Fairview, employed through CCAPS to teach in our graduate program, in our local community, or may be situated throughout the world. Affiliate Scholar is an ISGH-specific designation to apply to sex and gender scholarship broadly, and does not confer an adjunct or other faculty role with the University of Minnesota.
Note: Affiliate Scholars are distinct from the following: 1) Visiting scholars are external researchers who are pursuing scholarship in residence at ISGH, and may not have a long-term commitment to contributing to ISGH’s mission; 2) our adjunct faculty are affiliated with the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, and have specific criteria based on contributions to our teaching mission; 3) our CCAPS Instructors teach in our graduate program through the College of Continuing and Professional Studies. Affiliate Scholars may hold these or other positions simultaneously.
Expectations for Affiliate Scholars
Affiliate Scholars are expected to consistently make contributions to ISGH in each calendar year in the areas of research, education, clinical scholarship, or advocacy. Contributions can include presenting in our lecture series, providing guest lectures for courses or leading didactics, engaging in research or scholarly writing, working on clinical education materials, or serving as faculty in our graduate courses. For the latter, an Affiliate Scholar designation provides a tangible link to ISGH to accompany the primary CCAPS contract.
Benefits for Affiliate Scholars
Benefits of affiliation include opportunities to interact with fellow sexual and gender health scholars and professionals, the use of ISGH facilities for research and meetings, structured networking and collaboration opportunities each year, and recognition for scholarly work in sexual and gender health. Affiliation does not confer University privileges such as a university email or library access.
Two-year Terms for Affiliate Scholars
- Nominations for Affiliate Scholar status may be initiated by anyone at ISGH, or by self-nomination.
- Status is held for two-year terms, with potential for renewal following submission of a report on contributions.
- Nominated potential Affiliate Scholars will be interviewed to discuss fit with ISGH and possible contributions. If accepted, a formal letter will be sent out from the ISGH Director that will include expectations and benefits, and be signed by the Affiliate Scholar.
