Surgical Lead in pancreatic islet cryopreservation, exogenic organ development, and transplant immunology, Joseph Sushil Rao, MD, was recently invited to join the Young Investigator Committee (YIC) of the International Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association (IPITA).

The objectives of the IPITA YIC are:
1. To engage with young investigators and faculty and provide opportunities for professional development
2. To create a forum for new research trends and technology
3. To expand scientific and social programs for the IPITA biennial congresses
4. To encourage scientific exchange between young and senior investigators to help foster collaborations

His four-year term on the committee begins this February 2025.

"In 1991, Dr. David Sutherland was appointed as one of the three founding members of IPITA. Since then, two of his mentees and later colleagues, Dr. Bernhard Hering and Dr. Raja Kandaswamy, have gone on to serve as presidents of the association in 2013 and 2021, respectively. I am privileged to have received training from Dr. Hering in islet transplantation and Dr. Kandaswamy in pancreas transplantation at the University of Minnesota. Being elected to the Young Investigator Committee of IPITA and honored as the first recipient of the Distinguished David Sutherland Award motivates me to continue advancing the legacy of significant achievements in beta cell replacement. As a surgeon-scientist, I am committed to leveraging new technologies and expanding collaborations worldwide to further this cause," said Dr. Rao.

Congratulations on this exceptional achievement, Dr. Rao!
