A Milestone Moment for Mauritius with Melanie Graham, MPH, PhD
In late July, Dr. Melanie Graham had the remarkable opportunity to contribute to a milestone moment for Mauritius’ scientific community. She was invited not only to present at the Primate Management Conference, but also to participate in a special event hosted by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Research, an occasion Mauritian media described as a turning point in the country’s aspirations to expand its role in global biomedical research.
On July 28, 2025, Dr. Graham joined Minister Dr. Kaviraj Sukon at the official launch of the three-day conference. The Minister shared an inspiring vision for Mauritius to build a stronger biomedical innovation ecosystem, and he pointed to research areas such as islet cell transplantation and diabetes therapies, central to Dr. Graham’s program, as examples of what this future could hold. Dr. Graham was honored that the collective work of her team and collaborators was recognized as part of this national dialogue.
Mauritian coverage highlighted how the ideas shared at the event helped illustrate a path for Mauritius to evolve from being primarily a supplier into an active partner in translational science and therapeutic development.
At the scientific meeting on July 29, Dr. Graham presented on the essential role Mauritian cynomolgus macaques have played not only in next-generation diabetes advances, but also in broader breakthroughs in transplantation and regenerative medicine. As an accomplished primatologist, she shared her team’s evidence-based findings demonstrating how high-quality animal welfare is directly linked to stronger scientific models and better translational outcomes - an approach she described as the "marriage of welfare and science." She also discussed how this integrated framework has helped move the field closer to "the era of a cure for diabetes."
It was a week filled with collaboration, inspiration, and extraordinary hospitality, and an experience that left Dr. Graham deeply grateful to the Mauritian scientific and policy community for welcoming her into a conversation about their country's exciting vision for the future.
