Training & Workshops


The University Imaging Centers remain committed to supporting research during the Extended Reduced Operations and now the Sunrise period in compliance with University policy. This means that only approved Essential or Sunrise personnel related to formally approved research efforts can utilize the UIC at this time. We do have new policies in place as part of our approved Sunrise plan that will need to be adhered to by all users.

We can provide remote instrument support via Splashtop and Zoom, and have updated the computers on our instruments so we can remotely operate and assist with user sessions as needed. Please read and follow the requirements below. 

  1. You must be in good health (temperature <100.4F) to use the UIC. 

  2. You will be asked to provide a copy of your designation as an Essential or Sunrise researcher via this online UIC form. (You will need to login with your UMN Google email address).

  3. You must abide by UMN approved health, PPE, and distancing policies, including that masks are to be worn at all times.

  4. Instrument reservations must be made 24 hours in advance (NO WALK-INS to any UIC location no matter what the instrument calendars indicate). Please plan on padding your reservation 15-30 minutes to allow for decontamination before subsequent users. UIC staff must confirm all reservations in advance of use (No confirmation from staff means no reservation. No reservation means you cannot log into the instrument).  UIC staff appointments are by reservation only and will be performed virtually. This alerts UIC staff, maximizes social distancing, and reduces the possibility of inadvertent interaction with UIC staff and other UIC users. 

  5. Make sure to follow the cleaning and disinfection procedures posted by the instrument before and after use.

Using our instruments:

  • Wash hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer before and after (washing stations available in each facility).

  • Wear appropriate PPE, including fresh gloves (powder-free only). Remember that gloves used in common areas or for sample and slide preparation should not be reused. 

  • Wipe instruments and work surfaces with sanitizing wipes or 70-80% ethanol before and after useSee checklist in instrument rooms.

  • Reminder: No food or drinks in microscope rooms.


The University Imaging Centers (UIC) is a fee-for-use facility open to investigators and projects of members of the University of Minnesota community as well as external users. All external users are subject to the UIC external rates. An External Sales agreement is required for all users outside the University of Minnesota.

The first step towards using UIC instrumentation is to submit a training request through the submission form link below.

After receiving your training request, UIC staff will reach out to discuss the project and details of the experiment and work with you to select an appropriate microscopic modality. In this way, everyone is fully aware of the strengths and weaknesses in the experimental design, and the UIC personnel can provide maximum methodological and instrumental support throughout the project. If necessary to increase the sophistication of experiments, formal collaboration between the UIC and the PI's laboratory is possible.


As part of our ongoing commitment to the University of Minnesota research community and external investigators, the University Imaging Centers hosts technical workshops for hands-on training in imaging.

While we are constantly evolving and expanding our curriculum, past workshops have included: Core Microscopy Concepts, Sample Preparation, Microscopy Instrumentation & Software, Quantitative Analysis, and 3D Reconstruction.
