Hosted by the MSA DEI Committee, this inaugural "Lens On" webinar will feature invited speaker Dr. Antentor Hinton, Jr., PhD, from Vanderbilt University, who will discuss the DEI and mentoring work he has carried out and written about in his academic career.

Dr. Antentor Hinton, Jr. is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics in Vanderbilt University’s School of Medicine Basic Sciences, a member of the Vanderbilt Diabetes Research and Training Center, and the Ernest E. Just Early Career Investigator. He earned his Ph.D. from Baylor College of Medicine in 2016 and did postdoctoral research at the University of Iowa and Mayo Clinic – Rochester. Dr. Hinton’s research projects aim to elucidate insulin-mediated molecular mechanisms that regulate cristae dynamics and to identify molecular mechanisms that underlie molecule transfer between and morphological changes in the mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) that can be altered in pathophysiological states, such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease. More recently, Dr. Hinton received the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Science Diversity Leadership Award for his focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) and serial block facing-scanning electron microscopy (SBF-SEM) imaging work on mitochondrial networks in human disease. To date, he has published 126 papers (116 published and 10 in preprint or in press), gleaned 55 awards, and given over 214 invited talks (124+ Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI)/Mentoring talks; 90 research talks).
